To Hi. Country Council Members:
I am a business owner in downtown Hilo. I have been served a warning for my "soft
sign". I mentioned to the inspector that the sign was more awning than sign as I have 2
xtra large windows and I needed to cut the glare. I was told that an awning needed to be
structured to comply. Here on Waianuenue ave, we have extremely strong wind
conditions and there is danger of the signs swinging and hitting our windows. This has
already happened to a few businesses on our street, nearly hitting pedestrians (It's 136ja
vu and Hilo Seed and Snacks).
I am willing to comply but I also question the fairness of this law. Polititions have soft
signs littered all over yards. They don't have a time limit either it seems so it is up until
it deteriorates on its own. Surely, that is as much an eyesore as the signs that downtown
businesses.we have spent a lot of time into good design as well as having paid sign
businesses to execute this. Are non profit signs subject to the same rules?
Fairness, practicality, and beauty needs to be accounted for in drawing up or revising
these sign laws.
