study performed in 2000. The study found that providing this one-mile link
;rcumvented the 8-mile circuitous route along Palani Road and Queen
ka'ahumanu Highway between the upper and lower neighborhoods and

Me parkway also provides a free recreational area and opportunity for the
cation o a linear park in an area with over 3,000 students and an cvcr-
.~rowing high-density residential area.
I he opening of the pathway was celebrated with a Walk to School Day in
October 2000 with promicPB by County government that the pathway would be
ip---ned. ir. perpetuity. While this temporary closing is understandable .

I v,ou[d Vte to thank Councilman Angel Pilago and Councilman Ford for their
h,it4tive to insure that this community amenity is reopened and becomes a
model of Safe Routes to School throughout the island.
