RE: Insidious Wastewater Tax
I guess everyone thinks that anyone that owns an industrial building in Hawaii is rich and is
most willing to pay more and more "taxes", no matter how unfair.
The Kona Hale Hane Centre was completed in 1992. To this date, 8,700 SF of this 37,200 SF
building has never been leased, due to the terrible economy in Hawaii. Our net LOSS in 1997,
before depreciation, was $78,000. Three thousand dollars of this loss was from this new
wastewater tax that the County Council thinks is fair.
Let me summarize for the period March 8, 1997 thru January 7, 1998, a period of 10 months.

Landscaping Water 464,000 $ 956.44
Wastewater Charges $3,072.29
As none of the 464,000 gallons of water used for landscaping entered the wastewater sewer
system, the entire wastewater charge of $3,072.29 was actually for the 603,000 gallons of wa-
ter that did enter the wastewater sewer system.
Thus, we paid $1,242.96 for the 603,000 gallons of non-landscaping use and $3,072.29 for
wastewater use for these same 603,000 gallons of water.
Or, for every $100 worth of non-landscaping water we paid for, we paid $247 for wastewater,
with no increase in service.
How would you like to see a payment due to be paid by you arbitrarily increased from
$1,242.96 to $4,315.25 without any additional benefit to you in any shape or matter?
If you have to raise taxes, and raising fees is just a sneaky way of raising taxe ~ please, at
least, be fair.
