Re: Resolution 466-08 -
Dear Chairperson Hoffmann and Council Members:
Resolution 466-08 proposes an amendment to the current year's Salary Ordinance to provide
for a pay increase for the two county physicians. Over the last seven years, bargaining unit
employees whose pay is set by the collective bargaining process and executives whose pay is
set by the Salary Commission have received increases in compensation. Because they are the
only executive branch appointees whose salary is set by the Salary Ordinance, providing our
hardworking county physicians with commensurate pay increases was unfortunately
overlooked.
There is a crisis in healthcare on our island, and part of that crisis is a shortage of primary care
physicians and specialists. If we are to continue to attract physicians who are willing to take
the time to perform the numerous county physicals and other examinations referred to them,
we must maintain a pay level that makes it financially possible for them to do this work. As
the doctors' costs have risen over the last seven years, we need to recognize this and provide
them with an increase in compensation.
I ask for your support of Resolution 466-08. If you have any questions, please feel free to
contact me.
Aloha,
Harry Ki~
