B. 958 S. D. 1 H.D. Aloha City Council Members, I support Res. 462-08: "Supports S. B. 958 S. D. 1 H.D. I would support a total ban on all GMO foods and farming connected with any GMO products. The reason is simple. The concept of GMO is based on corporate profit and attacks the rights of the small farmer to propagate their own seeds. GMO is in effect a paten on life and simply goes against common sense. We are being sold on the value of GMO products because the genetic modification will protect the plants against disease, fungus or whatever the bug of the week is. The truth is that farmers have been fighting these blights for thousands of years and in the end the farmer wins. Human beings and the human food supply have a relationship that is many tens of thousands of years old. Therefore, genetically modified food must have an impact at the most basic cellular level on our bodies. The impact of genetically modified food on the human body has not been studied long enough to really understand its' effect. It is part of human arrogance to consider that because science is able to do something that it should. GMO seeds are designed to not reproduce. This puts our food supply in the hands of universities and large corporations and takes it out of the hands of the family farmer and the communities in which they live. It is a foolish and dangerous situation for the country and especially Hawaii. Because of Hawaii's isolation it is imperative that Hawaii's ability to produce food stays completely in the hands of the local farmer. We live in a dangerous world and in economic uncertainty; were Hawaii to be cut off from the mainland we would face a very serious situation if our seed stock were not in local hands. Please vote in favor of the local farmer. Please vote for the people of Hawaii. With Much Aloha, Bob Belcher Volcano, Hawaii 333-1928 VdP Comm. No. 0 O AO, / Ref, To:eftm LiUA Ref.
