Dear Hawaii County Council,
I'm giving testimony in support of the following resolutions:
Resolution 462-08
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING S.B. 958 S.D.1 H.D.1 TO IMPOSE A TEN-YEAR MORATORIUM ON
DEVELOPING, TESTING, PROPAGATING, CULTIVATING, GROWING, AND RAISING OF
GENETICALLY MODIFIED TARO IN THE STATE OF HAWAII
Resolution 463-08
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING H.B. 1577 H.D.1 TO TEMPORARILY PROHIBIT THE GROWING OF
GENETICALLY MODIFIED COFFEE FOR A PERIOD OF FIVE YEARS AND, AT THE SAME TIME,
PERMIT RESEARCH IN AN ENVIRONMENTALLY SECURE FACILITY
I strongly caution against altering the genetic make up of native taro.
Why gamble altering a nutritious and stable crop, especially one that is sacred
to Hawaii? What is the sense of adding potentially allergenic proteins to one of
the most non-allergenic foods there are? Comm 8 a .25_

I also believe GMO coffee would contaminate one of Hawaii's most valuable
and distinguished specialty crops. Why risk Kona coffee farmers loosing their premium

price point? Specialty Coffee markets would collapse as GMO coffee is not a specialty
coffee and, frankly, scares most specialty consumers. Why destroy a thriving industry
all for the self-serving aims of a few short-sighted individuals?
I'm asking you to please support the above resolutions.
