Dear Chairman Hoffmann,
The Kona Canny Farm Bureau Board of Ditectom respectively requests the Hawaii County Council's Committee oil
Environmental Management to vote in favor of Resolution 463-08 that serves to support H.B. 1577, H.D.1 in the 200€ Six e
of Hawait Legislative Session. This Bill requests a temporary prohibition of field resting of Genetically Modified Coffee for
a period of five years.
Section 2 of HB 1577 proposes an amendment to Title 11, Hawaii Revised Statutes calling for a 5-year moratorium rn
genetically modified coffee research except in an environmentally sccute facility. A secure facility is further dc6nai os ix
enclosed facility such ass a laboratory or greenhouse that has precautions in place to prevent the exchatge of genetic t, ueHal
between genetically modified coffee and non-genetically modified coffee.
If approved, HB 1577 will serve to presarve the unique brand identity and market price of coffee grown in the State of
Hawaii" This legislation then aooma very important to the "advancement and expansion" of a high value se;,'ment of
Hawaiian Ag-iculture
