Dear Council members, XIAZO~
Our Leleiwi Community Association supports the 9Eiftaxee to divide
Leleiwi Beach Park into two distinct beach parks with the names Waiolena
and Waiuli. Presently there are two identical signs that say Leleiwi
Beach Park, which causes confusion for the public. The name Leleiwi is
culturally incorrect according to the kupuna and Hawaiiana experts. The
true Leleiwi is further along the coast, past Lehia Park.
We agree with the research done by Helena Kapuni-Reynolds and Nathan
Evans. They talked to kupuna and members of the Hawaiian community and
consulted oral histories to come up with the correct names for these
County Parks. As we understand it, the park lands with the set of 3
pavilions that run parallel to Kalanianaole Street should be named
Waiolena Park; and the second set of pavilions that run vertically to the
street should be named Waiuli Park. Therefore, if someone is having a
picnic they can say where to meet without confusion.
Our Leleiwi Community Association has been meeting monthly for 30 years.
We put announcements in the newspaper and are always open to the public.
This issue has been on our agenda since April 2007.
We thank you for your consideration to properly name our County Parks.
