No. 864 PLACE: Council Room Ben Franklin Building 333 Kilauea Avenue, 2"d Floor Hilo, Hawaii TIME: 1:00 p.m. Council Chair and Members Hawaii County Council Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Communication No. 864, reports as follows: Communication No. 864 from Mayor Hazry Kim, dated December 7, 2007 nominates the following individuals to the County ofHawai`i Kailua Village Design Commission: Council District 8 -Fritz Harris-Glade, a 14-year resident of Hawaii, is employed as Director of Development of the Maryl Group Inc. Mr. Hams-Glade is not affiliated with any political party and, if confirmed, will serve a term to expire on December 31, 2009. Council District 7 -Ann Kern, a 10-year resident of Hawaii, is a lecturer and coordinator at the University of Hawaii Center -West Hawaii and also the director of publications and archives at Kulana Huli Honua. Ms. Kern is not affiliated with any political party and, if confirmed, will serve a term to expire on December 31, 2009. Council District 7 -Gregory Ogin, a 27-year resident of Hawaii, has been a realtor in the community since 1980. Mr. Ogin was past chairman and board member of the Kona Family YMCA, past member of the State ofHawai`i Disciplinary Board, and past president of the Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Ogin is a Democrat and, if confirmed, will serve a term to expire on December 31, 2009. Council District 8 -Paul Bleck, a 19-yeaz resident of Hawaii, is aself-employed architect and former member of this commission. Mr. Bleck is not affiliated with any political party and, if confirmed, will serve a term to expire on December 31, 2010. Council District 7 -Cindy Coats, who has lived in Hawaii for 11 years, is a self employed artisUdesigner. Ms. Coats is not affiliated with any political party and, if confirmed, will serve a term to expire on December 31, 2010. PC Repor[ No. 59 Communication 864 Page 2 of 2 Pursuant to Section 13-4, Hawaii County Charter, the County of Hawaii Kailua Village Design Planning Commission shall consist of members appointed by the mayor, and confirmed by the council. At the January 8, 2008 Planning Committee meeting, a statement in support of the nominees was presented by Corporation Counsel Lincoln Ashida. Bennett Mazk, representing the Kona Planning Department was also present and explained the important role of the Design Commission and its relationship working together with the Planning Depaztment and the Department of Public Works. Planning Director Yuen expressed thanks to the nominees and noted he was delighted that such a talented group of community people aze willing to serve on the County of Hawaii Kailua Village Design Commission. Planning Committee Chair Pilago noted the diverse cultural, social and professional disciplines represented by the nominees to the County of Hawaii Kailua Village Design Commission and stated that with the Committee's confirmation of Mr. Hams-Glade, Ms. Kern, Mr. Ogin, Mr. Bleck and Ms. Coats, there is no need to call them to appear again at the next Council session. However, Committee Chair Pilago requested that Mr. Fritz Harris-Glade, who was not in attendance, appear at the next Council session.
