Held on the day before Mother's Day, it is a project of Pahoa Weed & Seed, designed to foster a better economic climate in Pahoa by attracting new customers (and thanking old ones) and businesses into the village. There is also a strong element of community cohesion, and local nonprofits are given free booths so they can outreach to the public. Pahoa Weed & Seed gives out free merchandise (such as "Drug Free & Proud" stuffed bears at the Keiki ID booth staffed by HPD and paid for with forfeiture funds) and anti-drug literature and A'ole Drugs bumper stickers. The Pahoa Weed & Seed Youth Council will have a youth stage at the Pahoa Neighborhood Facility where the Battle of the Bands will take place - this is to encourage our budding young musicians and give the youth an attraction of their own as an alternative to anti-social behavior (sex, drugs, vandalism, gangs, etc.). TARGET GROUP TO BE SERVED: Entire island community is invited, but especially Puna District and E. Hawaii in general. Tourists are also encouraged to attend. AREA TO BE SERVED: Pahoa Village and Puna District. NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: In previous years we have had several thousand participants, including the organizers and volunteers, vendors, nonprofits, musicians, police and tourists.
