It was decided that the old road would ~ be closed and that we would set up a Community
Neighborhood Beach Watch instead. The teens suggested that Kohanailzi was not a place for unru]y
parties and want to farm a committee at school to help inform tlreix peers so they can he]p prevent abuses
from occurring. One teen remarbed that after spending some time camping with hiS family he realized
that this beach was a very special pace and he was planning to encourage his friends not to trash but to
respect and help protect Kvhanaihi.
The DLNR, Uept of Health and landowners wi]] woriz together with the po]ice to issue citativna
and re locate the homeless to protect beach health and sanitation. The Protect Kohanaihi 'Ghana will
continue to sponsor the two lua (portable toilets)and dumpater at the beach. NELI-IA will worlx with the
State to remove abandoned cars. We need help and support from t}re county.
Our trope i5 that through collective discussions and coa]ition building we achieve long term
sustainability; and drat worizing together, caring for the land and eachother, Kohanaiki and O'oma will
continue to be a place fox families to gather.
Our gva] is for Kohanailu to become a pariz. We envision the State, County, and Federa]
government worlung with the community to acquire and manage this area. We be]ieve we can achieve this
goal and become a Cultural Center and a model for innovative parlx stewardship. the Protect Kohanailzi
'Ghana is a 501(c)(3)non profit organisation and willing to worlZ in partnerships to build a land Cruet
to realize our goals.

Meetings held to establish a Community _1 as~ )~orce at Kohanai~Zi
Aloha Chairman Yagong and members of the Committee on Public- Wor>zs and Parizs,
7 would lie to update your comnvttee on the progress we have made since the communication o{
February 26, 1998. Two meetings were held at the Kona Police Station to during March to help avoid
and avert and un{ortunate situation resulting {rom teen dnig use, drinlzing and driving, and to address
issues n{ beach health and sanitation with regards to the homeless population at Kohanail<i. Botl,
meetings were well attended (about 40 people? with teens, parents, businesses, landowners and
government agencies represented. Angel Pilago, President o{ the Protect KohanaiJzi ~Ohana {acilitated
the meetings. Our intention as a group is to do something positive and to woriz on preventative e~forte.
We agreed that collectively we can arrive at a community based solution.
Seven Committees were {ormed to make up the Kohanaibi Com'tmunity Task Force:
