HomeMy WebLinkAboutREP PSPRC 013 01/23/2008 2006-2008 REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC SAFETY AND PARKS AND RECREATION DATE: January 23, 2008 RE: Communication No. 931/Resolution 490-08 PLACE: Council Chambers Ben Franklin Bldg., 2nd Floor 333 Kilauea Avenue Hilo, Hawaii TIME: 1:45 p.m. Council Chair and Members Hawaii County Council Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Your Committee on Public Safety and Parks and Recreation, to which was referred Communication No. 931, regarding Resolution No. 490-08, reports as follows: Resolution No. 490-08, in support of the establishment of a volunteer fire company and unit within the Kanekoa Subdivision of the South Kohala District, was transmitted by Council Chair Pete Hoffmann, via Communication No. 931, dated January 8, 2008. Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira spoke before your Committee, stating that the area is prone to fires. Chief Oliveira further stated that there is a great need to protect areas where urban and agricultural lands interface. Chief Oliveira informed your Committee of the basic requirements for the establishment of a volunteer fire department: 1) community must request; 2) requires commitment from 6 - 12 members of the community who have the necessary physical and academic capacity; 3) those individuals must guarantee a three week-end training commitment; 4) equipment must be issued, at a cost of approximately three to four thousand dollars per volunteer; and 5) there must be a residence where the equipment can be housed.
