Your Committee on Public Safety and Parks and Recreation, to which was referred
Communication No. 931, regarding Resolution No. 490-08, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 490-08, in support of the establishment of a volunteer fire company and unit within
the Kanekoa Subdivision of the South Kohala District, was transmitted by Council Chair
Pete Hoffmann, via Communication No. 931, dated January 8, 2008.
Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira spoke before your Committee, stating that the area is prone to fires.
Chief Oliveira further stated that there is a great need to protect areas where urban and agricultural
lands interface.
Chief Oliveira informed your Committee of the basic requirements for the establishment of a
volunteer fire department: 1) community must request; 2) requires commitment from 6 - 12
members of the community who have the necessary physical and academic capacity; 3) those
individuals must guarantee a three week-end training commitment; 4) equipment must be issued, at
a cost of approximately three to four thousand dollars per volunteer; and 5) there must be a
residence where the equipment can be housed.
Your Committee on Public Safety and Parks and Recreation is in accord with the purpose of
Resolution 490-08, and recommends its adoption.
