Re: WRITTEN TESTIMONY IN SUPPORT OF BILL 224,
Relating to Smoking in Certain Places in the County of Hawaii
Public Hearing on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, 9:30 a.m.
Committee on Public Safety and Parks and Recreation
As a concerned citizen, mother and grandmother, I would like to encourage the passage
of Bill 224. Our education system teaches our children the dangers of tobacco and the
benefits of physical activity. As a health concern, higher instances of chronic diseases
linked to tobacco use are still presenting numbers that should not be ignored. Cancer,
heart disease, stroke, & emphysema are among these illnesses that can be prevented if
tobacco use is eliminated. Lung cancer is the most preventable of cancers simply by
eliminating tobacco use or not starting in the first place.
We live in a beautiful environment that encourages healthy lifestyles. We need to
encourage more of our community members to utilize our natural resources in a way that
benefits everyone. As responsible adults, we have the capacity to be the role models that
make conscious decisions to make the future as safe and healthy for our keiki as possible
and to maximize our natural resources to improve the quality of life of our beloved
community.
Please accept my personal plea as written testimony in support of this bill.
