On behalf of the Hawaii 2050 Sustainability Task Force, the Hawai'i Island
representatives on the task force respectfully request an opportunity to present the
Hawaii 2050 Sustainability Plan to the Council Committee on Food and Energy
Sustainability on February 20, 2008. The brief presentation would take twenty to
thirty minutes and is intended to be the public process to not only inform the Hawaii
County Council but to also present the final plan to the general public. The plan is
being released on February 7th statewide and will be presented to the councils of
Kauai County, City & County of Honolulu and Maui County.
Hawaii 2050 is the most comprehensive statewide planning process in over three
decades, with input from more than 10,500 residents. The residents had input at
community meetings and stakeholder meetings; web surveys and public opinion
polling; the HI2050 Summit and the HI2050 Youth Summit.
What the Hawaii 2050 process found was that Hawaii's citizens want a balance
between economic development, environmental protection and strong communities.
This concept is known as the Triple Bottom Line.
As a result of Hawaii 2050, a legislative measure (HB2590) would codify the
importance, principles and goals of sustainability; recognize the Hawaii 2050
sustainability plan; and create a Sustainability Council to carry on the efforts of
Hawaii 2050, including conducting benchmarks and measurements on the state's

This effort dovetails nicely with many of the council's initiatives including the
energy sustainability commission.
We would appreciate an opportunity to briefly present the Hawaii 2050
Sustainability Plan to the Committee on Energy and Food Sustainability on their
February 20, 2008 meeting and respectfully request that you place us on that
meeting's agenda.
