An opportunity has arisen to lend support to the many teachers in
elementary, middle, and high schools on Hawai'i Island who are -0
pioneering school garden/ag programs. At least 25 fledging programs, most 3
receiving little financial support have been identified on the island. These f 1
programs are creating hands-on living laboratories for the students to deepen ca
their understanding of the sciences and nutrition, tying in social studies, -v
language arts, and math into meaningful activities in an outdoor
setting.
There is a growing awareness and commitment by communities all around Hawaii Island
that community food self-reliance, increased nutritional health,
exercise, and a knowledge of living systems will be important subject matter for
our future citizens.
The Kohala Center has recently formed the Hawai'i Island School Garden
Network to support the development of these gardens, bring teachers
together, assist in curriculum development and identification of
resources, identify funding opportunities, and provide further educational
opportunities for the teachers at a minimum of 20 K-12 schools.
I ask for your support of the School Garden Resolution so that we may all work together to
create
further educational opportunities for our children and youth.
