Aloha Hawaii County Council,
my name is Koh Ming Wei. I am the founder and educator of the Hawaii Sustainable Education
Initiative, a small private school in Honoka'a. At the center of and crucial to the curriculum is the
school's garden. The garden is fully integrated into all aspects of he curriculum including science, math,
language arts, foreign language (Spanish), art, history, and geography. The experiential element of the
program has greatly benefited my students' leaming and development. Not only do they learn academic
subjects, they also learn and practice core values such as responsibility, respect for the land, cooperation,
and teamwork as they tend the garden.
My research on Sustainable Education focused on experiential learning in the garden has anecdotally
shown that school gardens are extremely beneficial to developing skills such as problem solving, critical
thinking, collaboration, and connective thinking.
I am writing to ask that the Council fully support the School Garden Resolution #506-08 which enable
students on our beautiful Island to access learning and teaching in the garden. This will have long-term
benefit to the education of our young people.
