As you know, smoking is hazardous to all our healths. Two years ago our State passed a smoke-free law covering all workplaces in Hawai'i. However, smoking is still permitted in nearly all parks and beach parks within the State, including the Big Island. Our keiki continue to be exposed to the hazards of secondhand smoke. Additionally, discarding cigarettes and cigar butts onto our beaches is unsightly, unclean and particularly hazardous to small children who handle and sometime ingest them. What message are we sending our children when their places of play are polluted with smoke and the trash from dropped butts? Children and families deserve clean, healthy places to enjoy outdoor activities. The cigarette butts are not only hazardous to our health, but to the environment. They are not biodegradable and can last for many years. Imagine walking on a beach filled with cigarette butts instead of sand I strongly encourage the Council to vote yes to pass Bill 224. Last year, Kahalu% Beach Park in Kona went smoke free, let?s do the same for the rest of the Island. Passing Bill 224, will make visiting all our parks and beaches more enjoyable.
