RESOLUTION NO. 544 d8
A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT
AND FROM THE DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT(S) AND CREDITING SAME TO A
DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT(S)
WHEREAS, Kai `Opua Canoe Club is the oldest and largest Hawaiian outrigger canoe
club on the island of Hawaii, having been established in 1929; and
WHEREAS, Kai `Opua is a 501 (c)(3) non profit corporation working with the County
Department of Parks and Recreation for over 10 years to construct a canoe halau on five acres of
land located just north of the Makaeo Events Pavilion at the Old Kona Airport Park; and
WHEREAS, the halau will provide a much needed family building and gathering place
for the community, as well as a home for the canoes and canoe clubs, and provide a visible
indication to all who would visit the Old Kona Airport Park of the importance of the Hawaiian
outrigger canoe culture; and
WHEREAS, an additional grant of $300,000 from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs was
given to Kai `Opua to construct the canoe halau; and
WHEREAS, Contingency Relief funds from Council District 8 will be appropriated to
the Department of Parks and Recreation to be used to support the construction of the canoe
halau; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the
following amount is hereby transferred/appropriated as set forth below:

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall forward a copy of this
resolution to the Director of Parks and Recreation and the Director of Finance and that the
Director of Finance is hereby authorized to make the necessary transfers in accordance with the
terms of this resolution.
