RESOLUTION NO. 559 ®8
A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT
AND FROM THE DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT(S) AND CREDITING SAME TO A
DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT(S)
WHEREAS, in late 2007, the Kohala district was subject to a series of arson fires, the
biggest in October 2007 which burned simultaneously in nine locations, destroying over 2,600
acres of land, resulting in the evacuation of 400 residents and 200 homes; and
WHEREAS, it is vital that arsonists, willing to endanger the lives of residents of the Big
Island and members of the Fire Department, be stopped and punished for these crimes; and
WHEREAS, District 9 (North and South Kohala) is willing to offer a monetary reward
for any valuable information on identifying and locating the arsonists responsible for setting off
these fires; and
WHEREAS, the Sayer Foundation; a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization will act as fiscal
sponsor for the reward for the arsonists; and
WHEREAS, Contingency Relief funds from Council District 9 will be appropriated to
the Fire Department, to be used to fund the reward for identifying and locating the arsons; now,
therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the
following amount be and is hereby transferred/appropriated as set forth below:

010.221.5221.31 Fire Department $5,000

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall forward a copy of this
resolution to the Fire Chief and the Director of Finance and that the Director of Finance is hereby
authorized to make the necessary transfers in accordance with the terms of the resolution.
