With the help and approval of the County Council, the Arborist Advisory Committee (AAC) has been successful in designating 29 trees and 4 groves as "exceptional trees," in accordance with Chapter 14, Article 10 of the Hawai'i County Code. In an effort to implement the intent of this code to "safeguard exceptional trees from damage and destruction due to land development" the AAC, with the support of the Planning Department, would like to provide signs for each of these trees to appropriately recognize their significant status and to accurately identify them to the public. Unfortunately, the AAC does not have a budget to pay for the design, fabrication and installation of these signs. Over the years, the AAC has been very creative in addressing this shortfall. For example, our logo design (attached) was recently selected as part of a community-based design contest, which the AAC sponsored. There are exceptional trees located in each council district, except districts 3 and 9. Therefore, on behalf of the AAC, I would like to request that Councilmember's Yagong, Ikeda, Higa, Naeole, Jacobson, Ford, and Pilago each consider allocating $2,000 of their contingency funds for the Exceptional Trees Signage Project, through the Planning Department. If contingency funds are not available for the current fiscal year, I respectfully request the Council consider Comm. No. 0 7 Ref. To: Ref. Please allow 15 minutes on the agenda for this purpose.
