Dear Mr. Jarman:
Thank you for sending me a copy of Resolution 503-08, which was adopted by the
Council of the County of Hawaii on February 21, 2008. The State of Hawaii supports the
Council's resolution to create a United States commemorative stamp honoring Japanese
American World War II veterans.
Over 20,000 Americans of Japanese Ancestry (AJA) enlisted in the United States
Army during World War 11, including a large contingent from Hawaii. The 100' Infantry
and 442nd Regimental Combat Team served our nation with courage and honor and many
continued to serve our country and the State on their return from battle. AJA interpreters
and linguists serving in the Military Intelligence Service also played a major role in
shortening the war and saving countless lives.
A United States commemorative stamp honoring the significant contributions and
sacrifices of our AJA soldiers will serve as a symbol of the service performed by these brave
patriots despite the war-tirne hysteria based purely on unfounded racism.
