SUBJECT: Resolution to Foster Effective Water Management Practices That keduc% Jse 6f
Electrical Energy and Potable Water through Supply System Optimizati6v
Enclosed is a resolution that encourages the implementation of the recommendations in the
Hawaii County Energy Sustainability Plan by the Department of Water Supply (DWS) in order
to reduce the county's dependence on fossil fuels and save money by decreasing the total use of
potable water and fossil fuel.
The resolution calls upon the DWS to continue to detect and fix leaks in its system, to seek out
ways to increase energy efficiency in its water pumping and delivery systems, and to seek out
ways to use distributed and renewable energy generation to pump and transmit water within its
system.
The resolution further calls upon DWS and the county administration to draft a comprehensive
water conservation policy, to include encouragement of practices to reduce water and energy
demand within the county.
Finally, the resolution asks the mayor to present the draft comprehensive water conservation
policy to the council by May 1, 2009.
