I am currently helping 25 teens give up their tobacco addiction in our Not On Tobacco teen cessation program-the only teen program in the schools and agencies. They are trying to quit and are out at the beaches to exercise. As you'll see in my testimony, they need and deserve tobacco free beaches, parks and facilities, for many island youth this is all the recreation they get-it is all the families can afford. Let's move together for our families-it is their right to breathe clean air. In my position as the Senior Program Coordinator for the Hilo, HI 96720 American Lun Assoication of Hawaii, I stron I see the benefits of the intent Fax:{808)935-7474 g g y Phone: (808) 935-1206 of Bill 224, which would prohibit use of tobacco products at all County of Hawaii parks and beaches, effectively providing a clean and healthy environment for Hawaii's keiki, ohana, visitors and wildlife. Website: www.ala-hawaii.org The mission of the American Lung Association of Hawaii is to reduce lung disease and improve lung health; Bill 224 would strongly assist us in e-Mail: accomplishing our mission. The ALA of Hawaii provides the only pediatric lung(o~ala-hawaii.org school-based asthma education program as well as school-based tobacco education and prevention and tobacco cessation program for teens. We have just completed two teen Not On Tobacco programs, one at Hilo High and the other at Waiakea High with a total of 10 graduates. These youth have made a commitment to quit smoking and their haven is the beach. They want to quit smoking to save their lives and regain lung health. One of their main coping strategy's to help them through withdrawals is surfing. l plead with you on behalf of these youth and the 25+ youth still in the N-O-T program, at Goodwill Industries and Kua O Ka La PCS in Pohiki, make our beaches and parks tobacco free! As this bill moves forward, stand with the community and keep the bill intact with a complete ban on all parks, beaches and county facilities. We are an outdoors community and we all look forward to the trade wind weather when we can take our families to the beach or park. Our youth play golf and go to drag races. It is our duty to guarantee them clean air fo breathe. In closing, the public's health should be protected wherever possible, including when You Can': while enjoying Hawai'i's parks, beaches, and county facilities.
