Subject: please pass Bill 224 in its current form
Aloha Chairman Hoffman and Council Members:
I am asking that you pass Bill 224 in its current form. Any amendments introduced at tomorrowns hearing that may
make exemptions and accommodations will weaken the law, make it more difficult to implement, and create
confusion with enforcement.
We are supposed to be the " Health State " and we must take a stronger stand against things that are clearly
demonstrated to be unhealthy and create a higher risk of incapacitation and death; not to mention the assault on
our environment. I've heard about some health plan insurers who actually want their members to continue
smoking tobacco so they die earlier and thus cost less in the long run. 1 hope this is not the norm, but in the
words of Bill Cosby, "Come on people!"
Lets keep our focus and do the right thing. Government officials are given the task of protecting our lands & our
people. How will you protect our young infants & children, those with medical disabilities and other chronic health
conditions? Do you feel this is a priority? Or, does the vocal minority of tobacco smokers prevail? I wonder if
someday a disabled citizen will file a lawsuit against the County for not having equal access to public parks &
recreation areas. As it stands now, a disabled citizen with diminished lung capacity might be putting their self at
risk by parking in a County parking lot and proceeding to their "public" destination. Sometimes all it takes is one
breath of second-hand smoke to set off a chain of events such as an asthma attack or headaches.
Please consider yourselves an important part of helping the citizens of Hawaii County to respect their bodies &
the'aina for generations to come.
