Subject: COMMENT FOR INCINERATOR HEARING
WHEELBARROWS OF MONEY
The proposed incinerator is not a plan to burn rubbish, but to burn money.
The cost per resident (approx. 165,000 people) for the first year of construction and
operation is as follows: cost to design and build is $125.5 million;
ADD yearly operating cost is $7.1 million; ADD $8.6 million a year for 25
years for loans needed to finance the plant; ADD $850,000 yearly county
expense to dispose of the ash at the Puuanahulu landfill;
TOTAL of $142,050,000; next SUBTRACT the $6.9 million the county
will receive for the surplus electricity, which leaves a GRAND TOTAL cost
of $135,150,000. Lastly, DIVIDE the number of residents into the grand
tota[for a per person cost of $819,091 for the first year!
Sorry, there is no single solution to a complex problem. Remember, more
than 10 years ago H-Power was going to solve Oahu's trash problem (Not).
Aside from using a quarry as a new dump, the County could or contract a
massive recycling effort by buying all generic glass, cardboard, newspapers,
magazines, steel cans, scrap metal, etc. from people and recovering some of
the money from the subsequent sale.
Late breaking news has it that Wheelabrator will soon be changing its name Q
to Wheelbarrows-of-our-money. Cromm.
