Wheelabrator Technologies - Concord, NH
In New Hampshire, Wheelabrator Technologies operates two trash
incinerators: a 250-ton per day municipal solid
waste (MSW) facility in Claremont (winner of a 2004 Dirty Dozen
award) and a 500-ton per day site in Concord.
Toxic air emissions, including particulates, sulfur dioxide, carbon
monoxide, dioxins/furans, volatile organic
compounds (VOCs), and heavy metals from the incinerators pose a
substantial health risk to residents. Snapshot
testing carried out by Wheelabrator showed that between 2000
and 2003, emissions of lead from the Penacook
facility rose 967% to 119 pounds per year, putting the
Wheelabrator Penacook site in the top five of the state's lead
sources. Emissions of mercury nearly doubled to 24 pounds
between 2000 and 2003. The plant's Title V air permit
is also expired, and under current review for renewal by the New
Hampshire Department of Environmental
Services. Mink Hills Center for Sustainability and Citizens
Leading for Environmental Action and
Responsibility (C.L.E.A.R.) are citizen-based groups working to
protect New Hampshire's public health and
environment from threats posed by incineration.
