President-Elect Aloha, Chairman Hoffman:
Barbara A. Hastings
The Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce, which represents more than 340 businesses
Vice President and 720 members, wishes to urge your yes vote on the upcoming question on multi-
Mary Begier year contract before the Finance Committee on the county's waste-to-energy project.
Treasurer
Jon Miyata Over the last 15 months and continuing through this week, HICC has stayed abreast of
this important and potentially expensive issue, including holding a joint public forum
Past President last year with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Hawaii. We wanted
David DeLuz Jr. to learn as much as we could so that our opinions as a group and as individuals would
be informed.
Directors

Gary Fujihara even as the percentage of recycled materials goes up, the sheer volume of waste grows
Stan Fortuna, Jr. too.
Judith Fox-Goldstein
Mike Gleason We promise to continue our due diligence to the conclusion of the process. Right now,
though, we have asked and gotten answers to all the questions that can be answered
Joseph Hanley, Jr. Without the next step.
Tan Higashi
Jim Kennedy We are comfortable that a yes vote, first by the Finance Committee and then by
Randy Kurohara Council, will allow the parties to properly amass the remaining information on costs,
Warren Lee impacts, energy contracts and the like.
Barry Mizuno
Seth Murashige Like you, and the other members of Council, the Chamber is continually approached
Irene Nagao by people with other ideas and other technologies to solve our waste problem. But the
Sharon Scheele County entered into a good and honest process to get to this point and should continue
Ron Schurra on that trajectory that will lead to fuller cost estimates and environmental impact
assessment.
Steve Shropshire
Alice Sledge Mahalo for your efforts and time on behalf of our County.
