Subject: C-17 Training Flights
Councilman Yagong,
I would have no problem with C-17 training flights over Hawaii. I cannot think of a more professional
group of people than the US Air Force in the execution of their mission. The C-17 is one of the most
modem, quiet and effecient cargo planes in the world. I don't think the Air Force would endanger
civilians, their valuable pilots or multi-million dollar aircraft in unsafe training exercises.
I can attest to the need for proper training for our AF pilots. While in VietNam, I had several occassions
to call close in air support in the form of Napalm, cluster bombs, high explosive, and other ordnance
while engaged with the enemy. I can remember, during the firefight, telling myself, "I hope i don't make
a mistake and call this in on myself', as close in support means exactly that. I can also remember telling
myself as the bombs were released, "I hope that pilot didn't fall asleep in the class on close in air
support". The fact that I can write this email today attests to the proficiency of our AF pilots. I would
no want to have a situation where our AF pilots lacked the proficiency they require for their missions
because they lacked for a good training facility.
In short, this is another boogy-man that I do not fear as we seem to be afraid of everything these days.
My goodness, if our ancestors acted as cowardly as some of our CAVES or NIMBYs these days, you
and i would still be back in our respective "old countries".
