This is written proclamation that I oppose the proposed C-17 Military Training Route over the Big
Island. I believe that my family's well-being, the health of the community, and the welfare of the
natural environment would be adversely impacted by the project.
My husband and I have lived in the small community of Ahualoa for 15 years, enjoying a very quiet
neighborhood and serene and peaceful lifestyle. We particularly appreciate the natural beauty and
wonderment of the area, including native vegetation and wildlife in contrast with the open rangeland of
Hawaiian Home Lands. We especially treasure the majestic views of Mauna Kea from our home.
Because our home is located in the exact flight path within the proposed navigation corridor for the
C-17 Military Training Route (see attached map), we would be directly impacted by these very large
and very loud aircraft flying over our residence. My family and neighbors have significant concerns
and worries about this project which include:
I. Disruption and loss of sleep
2. Interference of daytime and nighttime activities (inside and out)
3. Disruption of conversation and speech
4. Decrease in property values
5. Increase in property insurance rates
6. Increase in anxiety, nervousness, and fear
7. Adverse impact on catchment water quality from airborne pollutants
8. High levels and frequent intervals of noise pollution
9. Negative behavioral and physiological effects
10. Negative impact to our "quality of life"
11. Negative health effects from exposure to loud noise, engine exhaust, sleep disruption, etc.
12. Disturbance of pets, farm animals, and wildlife
13. Decrease in air quality
14. Negative physical, psychological, and social effects, especially to children
15. Disruption of home-based workers, invalids, and homebound persons
Another concern I have is the establishment and use of the 70-mile long navigation corridor over my
home and other areas of the Big Island. Once the corridor is created, nothing will prevent other military
aircraft, includingjets, helicopters, and tankers, from using the airspace along with the C-17. In
addition, there will be no limits to the time of day, number, size, and speed of aircraft using the
corridor. There also is no guarantee that assurances given by the military today will be applied in the
future due to "military necessity".
1 feel that these low-level training exercises over our community and other areas of the Big Island
should NOT be conducted and that the C-17 military training exercises be performed using existing
navigation corridors on the Mainland.
