The Honorable Brenda Ford, Chair
Council, Intergovernmental Committee
333 Kilauea Avenue, Second Floor
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Dear Councilmember Ford and members of the Committee:
Thank you for this opportunity to express my concerns regarding the planned environmental
assessment regarding low-altitude C-17 flights planned over the Big Island.
I am an alumni and former faculty member of Honoka'a High School and am currently working
as UniServ Director for the Hawaii State Teachers Association. With this background, I am very
concerned for the health and safety of the children, teachers, staff and communities surrounding
the numerous schools in the proposed flight corridor.
It is disconcerting that the Air Force has undertaken this project with little or no community
education or input up until this point and that it is necessary for the community to have to
petition it's government for openness. I believe that it is necessary for government, including the
military to be honest and transparent in it's operations where American Citizens are impacted
and it would behoove the military to be very sensitive to the distrust and well-laid concerns
regarding operations on the Big Island given recent revelations regarding the presence of
depleted uranium at the Pohakuloa Training Facility.
I would like to thank the Hawaii County Council for taking the lead in addressing the concerns
of the residents of the Big Island. I encourage the Committee and Full Council to insure that the
health and safety of the residents of the Big Island are preserved and protected.
Aloha,
