Diane, would it be possible for me to email you my testimony? There's no way I can get to the library to
print it out before the meeting. I'll just add it here and hope you can include it with yours without
making an extra 15 copies. I emailed congress people today. Just a short opinion statement This is
longer and from a different angle. Hope you can do this.
Testimony re C 17 MTR
I do not doubt that the present military planners are sincere in their statements about the potential impact
of the C 17MTR. However, past events in Hawaii's history serve as a warning about how this event
might go. In 1893 then President Cleveland promised Queen Liliuokalani that the lands taken by the
U.S. would be returned to the Hawaiian people. The administration changed and President McKinley
reneged on that promise stating that Hawaii was valuable for US defense. Still waiting. In the 1900s the
U.S.military regime stated that the government now needed lands at Kahoolawe and Makua Valley to
prepare troops for national defense. Once again, promises were made that these lands would be restored
in good shape to the Hawaiian people. Still waiting. Political/military regimes change. Promises made
by one regime have not been honored by subsequent regimes. We are now told that the C 17MTR is
necessary (again) for the defense of our nation. and that the impact on the 'aina will be minimal. Asa
teacher who has led student groups to Kahoolawe and into Makua to restore those' aina over a period of
13 years, I realize that promises to restore Hawaii's lands have a dismal track record. In closing, I
realize that the C17 needs a MTR. How about a ranch in Crawford, Texas? Comm. No. 11g, KQ.
