HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 1142.008 2006-2008 April 21, 2008 Hawaii County Council Committee on Public Works & intergovernmental Relations Aloha, My name is Dianne Higgins and I came to Hawaii in 1955 as a military dependent. 1 lived on Oahu until 1992 when our family moved to the Big Island. We made the move so we would be able to live in a place that was peaceful, quiet and less congested than Oahu-a place where our children and grandchildren could visit for a quiet, rural experience. For the last 16 years we have enjoyed our relatively quiet lifestyle and the ability to enjoy our animals now that our children are grown. Our neighborhood in Pa'auilo Mauka is agricultural and our neighbors have horses, cows, and sheep. I understand that the proposed C-17 training missions could fly over our "sparsely populated" community. I'm not sure what sparsely populated means, but I do know that in our small community has approximately 393 residences. Please see the survey (on the reverse) done by our Pa'auilo Mauka Kalopa Community Association done in July 2007 that lists the roads with the number of houses on each road. This number has probably grown since that time. The thought of huge C-17 planes flying over our homes and community (even at higher elevations) is very disturbing. Right now, all the animals get very upset over any loud noises. We have schools, an education center, a health care center, and a long term health care center that would be adversely affected by the noise and pollution of the planes. Also, I understand that the Nature Conservancy has several preserves in the path of the proposed flight corridor. I hope and pray that this proposed activity doesn't happen in our community. There must be other areas where this type of activity can take place without such III effects. We moved to the Big Island for a better lifestyle and our community of people, animals, plants and all things sacred need to be supported-not desecrated. Thank you for your time and attention.
