Gentlemen:
Ginger Towle of the West Hawaii Humane Society (WHHS)
asked me to tell you about my knowledge of the Annie Servido
bequest and the Hawaii Island Humane Society (HIHS).
In the beginning of 1997, Madelyn Barrea told me that
Annie Servido had left $30,000 to the Humane Society to
be used to build a cat shelter in Kona. I was very excited
but heard nothing about it from HIHS.
Late in 1997, I was overheard by Lisa Fowler complaining
about the fact that no new cat shelter was being built
in Kona despite the fact that the money had been bequeathed
to the Humane Society for that purpose. Lisa called me
at home that day and told me that the bequest was just
a rumor and there was no bequest. Shortly after that,
Loreli, the volunteer coordinator, spirited me away from
the shelter and took me to Dennys. She gave me a pep
talk about HIHS and also mentioned that Lisa, after a
four month court battle with Ginger Towle and WHHS, had
won a bequest for HIHS. Later that week, there was an
announcement at a volunteer meeting that HIHS had received
a bequest for $20,000 for a cat shelter.
Ginger Towle assures me that she never took HIHS to court
over the bequest. it is my opinion that if I had never
mentioned the bequest to Melissa, Lisa's administrative
assistant, the HIHS would not have announced the bequest.
I also beli,dre that because HIHS does not own the shelter
in Kona, no cat shelter will ever be built.
