Dear Councilman Reynolds:
After giving this a lot of thought I feel I have to write you.
About a week ago I adopted a kitten from Hawaii Island Humane Society, the Kona shelter.
I chose a kitten from a group of 9, she was very cute, but a mess, covered in poop. I took the
kitten and bathed her right there at the shelter. When I adopted her I took her directly to my
veterinarian. She was very thin. Upon taking her home I found she didn't know how to eat, she
obviously hadn't been weaned. I took her back to the veterinarian for a day and ahalf to make
sure all our efforts to get her to eat some solid food was working and she would be o.k. She's
coming along fine now, however, I then began to think about the fact she probably hadn't eaten
anything at the shelter because all that was there were kibbles. There can be other very young
kittens out there starving because they are not being offered soft food and obviously no one is
making sure they are eating.
First, I reasoned that they don't have time to be cleaning up animals, etc. But on giving this
more thought, that's their job. This is the agency that people are to go to to ask how to care for
an animal. They should be setting an example, they are listed as a Humane Society! .
I have heard many things about the current operation by Hawaii Island Humane Society and now
that this incident has happened to me I feel a change in management is definitely needed. First I
really didn't want to say anything, however, if I don't take responsibility when I know personally
that there is a serious problem, than I am part of the problem.
Please see that West Hawaii Humane Society is awarded the animal control contract for West
Hawaii.
