SUBJECT: TRAFFIC CODE AMENDMENT
Downtown traffic safety project
Ponahawai Street, proposed no parking zones
The Department of Public Works is working on a project to improve pedestrian and traffic safety at various
intersections in downtown Hilo. Included in this project is a proposed left turn lane and traffic signal
improvements at the Ponahawai Street/Kilauea Avenue intersection.
In order to proceed with these improvements, 9 metered stalls on the Puna side of Ponahawai Street will be
affected, 3 stalls between Kinoole Street and Kilauea Avenue, and 6 stalls between Kilauea Avenue and
Kamehameha Avenue. A location map is attached.
We conducted a parking survey along the Puna side of Ponahawai Street between Kilauea Avenue and
Kamehameha Avenue and found approximately 39% of the existing 22 stalls not being utilized. We also
observed that utilization of the 7 stalls between Kinoole Street and Kilauea Avenue was minimal. The existing
parking stalls on the Hamakua side of Ponahawai Street will not be affected.
