Your Cormittee on Public Works and Intergovernmental Relations, to which was referred
Communication No. 76 repots as follow,:
Cmmmunication No. 76, dated Dccemher 2;.2002 is fi~om Mayor Harr} Kim submitting the appointment
of Mr. Merle Martin to serve on the Hawaii County Transportation Commission. According to
Communication No. 76, Mr. Martin is a 2d-year resident of Hawaii and cw~rently serves as the
Coordinator for the Center of Independent Living. He is also very active in his commmtit~ participating in
both the State Mental Health Board for Hawaii County and the Ocean View Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Martin is a member of the Independent Party. Ifcontinned. he will fill the Council District 6 vacancy
and serve until December 31, 20117.
During the meeting. several members commended Mr. Martin's willingness to serve and spoke in tavor of
his nomination. Also during the meeting, in response to an inquiry by this committee.
Mr. Wendell Hatada. Executive Assistant, Oflice of Hie Mayor, reassured committee members that the
'T'ransportation Commission has not had difficulties conducting husiness or with retaining a quorum of
commission members during the past year.
Your Committee on Public Works and Intergovernmental Relations recommends the approval ufthe
appointment of Mr. Merle Marlin to the Ilawai'i County Transportation Commission.
