Your Committee on finance, to which was referred E3ill No. 208, reports as follows:
Bill No. 208, transmitted by Council Chair ,lames Y. Arakaki, via Communication No. 451.
dated January 8. 2004, amends Chapter 2, Hawaii County Code 1983 (1995 Edition),
Administration, relating to the Establishment of Volunteer Fire Stations.
The purpose of this measure is to comply with Section 46-13.1, I lawai'i Revised Statutes. which
allows the county council to establish and maintain one or more volunteer fire stations in any
area or areas of the county as it may determine to he necessary to provide adequate lire
protection. While some vohmteer fire stations may require monies to be budgeted, others may
not. For this reason, it is important that the location of all volunteer tire stations be specitied by
law in order for the council and the general public to know where these stations would be sited.
This measure also corrects Section 2-17, Hawaii County Code, Head of volunteer fire
department, which has inadvertently named a position, Chief F.nginecr, that the tire department
does not have.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Bill No. 208, and
recommends it pass first reading.
