Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Communication No. 707 transmitted by
Mayor Harry Kim, dated July 22, 2004, nominated Ms. Rene Siracusa of Counci] District 5 to
the County of Hawaii Planning Commission. Communication No. 707.1 transmitted by
Executive Assistant Wendell Hatada, dated July 29, 2004, corrected an error in Communication
No. 707 and stated that Ms. Siracusa currently serves as president of Malama O Puna.
Ms. Siracusa is a member of the Green Party. If confirmed, she will replace Aurelio Mina and
will serve a term on the Planning Commission until December 31, 2008.
On behalf of Mayor Kim, Mr. Hatada made a brief presentation detailing the review of
Commission candidates, the qualifications of Ms. Siracusa, and the favorable comments received
from Puna community associations polled in regard to her nomination.
District 5 Councilman Gary Safarik expressed his support for Ms. Siracusa's confirmation.
As three Council members were not present, it was recommended that Ms. Siracusa attend the
full Council meeting taking up her nomination to answer any questions from Council members.
Your Committee on Planning is in accord with Mayor Kim's nomination of Ms. Siracusa to the
County of Hawaii Planning Commission to serve a term until December 31, 2008 and
recommends her confirmation to Council.
