Re: RESOI 1TION #279-98 (Mayor to negotiate with SoBay Hi./land exchange)
Dear Mr. Chung:
1 am a West Hawaii resident and represent the V,'est Ilawaii Surfing Association, Inc., a
I lawaii non-profit corporation- I am also a legal advisor to the Association of Surfing
T'rofessionals, the worldwide sanctioning body for professional surfing.
We support Resolution #279-9R and request your favorable action on this resolution.
Waiaha Bay is one of the fns , xvhtto-sand beaches between Kailua town and Kcauhou
Bay. It has been a traditional surfing venue and provides recreational opportunities for residents
and visitors alike. It is, in the words of a former world-champion surfer, a "gem" that should be
plescrvcd in its natural, pristine ,talc.
Over 1,400 people have signed o petition in support of this land exchange. I have yet to
rnect anyone who favors development of this unique, shoreline property. This resolution would
provide a creative opportunity to resolve the present conflict over this property, which is the
subject of a contested case and a lawsuit. Passing this resolution would also reflect favorably on
file County Council and County administration without irrevocably committing it to the
exchange.
Please give this Resolution a favorable recommendation. Thank you for your
consideration.
