Subject: TESTIMONY FOR THIS EVENING'S HEARING RE: TRASH SOLUTIONS
Councilor Pilago:
I would like to have this message entered as my testimony regarding the Wheelabrator Technologies
trash incinerator proposal for handling Hawaii County trash.
Trash incineration is an old method for trash disposal but if it is done using the most advanced methods
of trash stream separation, recycling and high tech combustion coupled with energy production it is the
best way to proceed. Don't dwell upon the cost to the County and its citizens unless you will also study
the cost of doing nothing or other alternatives that will not solve all of our problems.
Trucking East Hawaii trash to Puuanahulu Landfill is not the best solution. Barging trash away is not
viable in the long run. As an Island community we must ultimately deal with disposal of our own self-
generated wastes.
Please consider voting in favor of the best trash handling solution before us: the Wheelabrator
Technologies solution. It is the correct action to take in realization of your fiducial responsibility as our
County Council representative.
