~~1e were disappointed to read that the Finance Committee voted
down the rubbish incinerator without taking the cost-free
six-month opportunity to learn more about the current proposal.
It is good that Mayor Kim and his administration will try hard
to win approval of the six-month plan by at least a majority
of the full Council.
In addition to revealing more data on the ~~~heelabrator, the
six-month time could be used for a serious financial study on
the other alternatives that many citizens find attractive
a new landfill and increased recycling, or even outshipping all
our rubbish. Over a long term, say 20 or 30 years, what could
we expect each of these to-cost taxpayers: in combination,
by themselves, or in conjunction with an incinerator that repays
part of its cost in electric power?
We think that an incinerator would be the best choice for the
long term in a sustainable Hawaii. But, whether or not it does
become the Council's choice, we think it is much too early
to turn it down. Please act to accept the six-month study
proposal when the full Council meets in Play.
