Non-Profit Grants-In-Aid; Account No. 5472.37, "Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii", $30,000
Aloha Chairman Hoffman and members of the Hawaii County Council,
Please consider my testimony in support of Bill 252.
By way of introduction, many of you may know me as former Deputy Managing Director, County of Hawaii. 1, am
however, before you today as an active board member of Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii.
The affiliate began here in 2002 with a mission to empower families and build hope through home ownership for
low-income partner families. We build simple and decent homes for families making between 40-60% of the
median income for West Hawaii.
We built our first home in 2006, 3 homes in 2007 and have 4 scheduled for 2008, including our first DHHL
partner family build in Kawaihae.
Last year we opened Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii Restore, selling reusable and surplus building materi31s,
to the public and using the proceeds to help fund the construction of Habitat homes.
Restore is off to a great start and proceeds are being set aside to help with our 2008 home builds.
But, we need your help. Bill 252 asks for a single line budget request for Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii. Tie
funds requested will help staff a volunteer coordinator, Restore staff and fund an on-site construction supervisor.
I ask that the County Council support Bill 252 and the components attached to it that will help us work together
to provide safe, decent and affordable housing for those in need here in West Hawaii.
