I wish to state my support for Bill 276 regarding the Redistricting Commission. We have seen so much
tampering with democratic principles in recent years, that I really fear for our country. It's more
important than ever to ensure fairness at all levels of government, and this is something that the nine of
you can do to help bring it about at the county level.
I do, however, have one problem with the bill as presently written. The latest version I have provides
for the mayor to appoint the Commission members, with confirmation by the Council. I believe it
would be more democratic for each Council Member to appoint the Commissioner from his or her
district, to be confirmed by the whole Council.
I urge you to adopt the bill with that change.
On another matter, I am happy to hear of a move toward protecting the leeward North Kohala coastline,
from the Akoni Pule Highway to the shore, and I urge you to do everything you can to bring that about.
