Re: A Resolution Supporting the Hawai'i Supreme Court's Decision to Create
an Access to Justice Commission to Assist Low Income Hawai'i Residents
in Obtaining Civil Legal Services
Enclosed is a resolution supporting the Hawai'i Supreme Court's decision to
create an Access to Justice Commission (Commission) to assist low income
Hawai'i residents in obtaining civil legal services.
The creation of the Commission was the first recommendation in a ten-step
action plan released in a November 2007 report titled Achieving Access to
Justice for Hawaii's People, which can be found in its entirety at
http://www. hsba. o rg/resources/ 1 /Documents/Access %20to%20J ustice. pdf
The report was produced by a nonprofit entity called the Access for Justice Hui; a
conglomeration of representatives from a variety of professional, educational,
and civic organizations.
The remaining nine steps of the ten-step action plan are listed in the attached
resolution and further delineated in Exhibit A, a companion attachment to the
resolution. The attached resolution also supports the implementation of the
remaining nine steps of the ten-step action plan.
Please refer the resolution to the appropriate committee to meet on June 17,
2008.
Thank you.
