Comm. NO. 1(17."r Ref. To: Ref. Date JUN Council Chairman Pete Hoffman, & Members of the County Council. I have provided Chairman Hoffman with my statement, I Letters from Veterans Organizations, and a whopping 1,482 signatures of Hawaii County Residents who support a Petition that requests the Korean War Memorial Monument to be placed in Liliuokalani Gardens. GOOD MORNING I am Robert Montague, a life member of the Korean War Veterans, and also the. KWV, and VFW Service Officer, I assist Veterans, and widows with S/C' Disability Claims, and Benefits, over the past 5 years we have processed 394 claims and helped several hundred Veterans obtain S/C Disability Comp. from 10% to 100 % . I would like to report, these Disabled Veterans, along with DAV Chapters 6, 7, & 9 from Hawaii County, bring disability revenue into Hawaii County in amount of about $22,400,000 annually, and if you add the Retired Military, their families, Active duty, Air N G, ,Army N G, - KMC, PTA, and US Army Res. Units and dependents, this revenue would likely triple. The Military and Veterans, and their dependents are a definite economical asset to Hawaii County. I would' also like to report on the importance of Res. 631-08 and Liliuokalani Gardens, I have sent each Council person a information package on the KWV Memorial Monument Project, and the location of Liliuokalani Gardens as the proper site. But first, I would like to give you information about the very large number of soldiers Killed in action through out all previous Wars, from Hawaii County, the figure is 273 killed in action. Starting with 2 soldiers killed in action from the Civil War, which have been oven looked for 144 years, one soldier was. a prominent Hawaiian gentleman with roots back to King Kamiehameha. You have a letter from SgvMaj(ret) Emily Wery, which will be read by KWV Boogie Luuwai, the letter explains Mr. Henry Timothy Pitman background history and genealogy, 'on the Big Island, we are still working to obtain the name of the 2d soldier killed in action in the Civil: War. In WW I, eleven (11) soldiers were killed in action each has a bronze plaque, with his name on it, at the base of a Palm tree on the east side of the Federal bldg. and the Post Office downtown on Waianuenue Ave. there is no Monument for these soldiers, and very few people of Hilo even know, that they exist. But, 5 of the l i soldiers killed in action are of Hawaiian descent, the others are Hawaiian born and native to Hawaii. In WWII, 157 soldiers from Hawaii County were killed in action, 10 were of Hawaiian descent the others are all Hawaii born which makes them all native to Hawaii, there is no Memorial Monument for these soldiers. In the Korean War, there was a total of 456 soldiers killed in action from the State of Hawaii, 47 soldiers are from Hawaii County, 8 of the 47 are of Hawaiian descent and the others are all Hawaii born soldiers, and native to Hawaii. During the Vietnam. War 50 soldiers were killed in action, 13 were of Hawaiian descent and the others were Hawaiian born, there is a Memorial Monument in memory of these soldiers killed in action. At the present we have 6 soldiers killed in action in the Afgan and Iraq War which is on going, from Hawaii County, 3 are of Hawaiian descent and the others are Hawaiian born and native to Hawaii. What I want to empathize, is that a large number, 41 soldiers killed in action during the above Wars that I have mentioned, are of Hawaii descent and with out exception the other 232 killed in action were Hawaiian born and native to Hawaii. These soldiers all gave theirs lives and paid the supreme sacrifice for our Freedom, Liberty, and way of life, that we all enjoy today Therefore in consideration of Queen Liliuokalani Gardens as a location for the Korean War Veterans Memorial Monument, which will include those soldiers who do not have a Memorial Monument in their memory. We Korean War Veterans believe there is no other proper location to put the Korean War Memorial Monument, which will provide maximum exposure to the citizens of Hawaii County, the State of Hawaii, and Visiting Tourists, so as to receive the proper Honor, Recognition, and Respect that these brave soldiers so surely deserve. When you consider the comparison of soldiers billed in action you can only draw the conclusion that Liliuokalani Gardens is the most fitting and proper location for this very Meaningful, Honorable, and Distinguished Memorial Monument. The Korean War Veterans ask the County Council for their Blessing and Approval of Resolution 631-08, to clear the way for the Korean War Memorial Monument to be placed in Liliuokalani Gardens.. Also the Korean War Veterans extend our special thanks and appreciation to Councilman Stacy Higa, for his Introduction of Resolution 631-08, thank you very much, and thank you Chairman Hoffman, and all Council Members. We feel that a memorial monument is long overdue for this island. As Hilo is the county seat of government, it is only fitting that it be erected there. LiIiuokalani Gardens is probably the best location for such a memorial, as it would have a high visibility factor, easy access, and be available to the people of the big island, and the touring public. The argument that it should be saved for the Hawaiian heritage really does make much sense, as all the men who died in Korea were Hawaiiani Hawaii made up of people who traveled here. Everyone, either came ire from som xe else, or was born here. Even the native people had ancestors who came from somewhere else. This was a large island sitting in the middle-ofa great.ocea t was made a great island by the people who came here from somewhere else. Al F these people make up the culture of this island. When I look at the list of Hawaiians who died for a free Korea I see an' assortment of names, from European, Asian, Caribbean, and Polynesian origins. These are the kind of people who are Hawaiians. These are the kind of people that this monument should honor. We agree with Chapter 231's letter in full, and would like to go on record in saying that we are in full support of his efforts. r 1 Sincerely yours Ronald A. Hawaii 96778 Re: Endorsement and support for the Korean War Veterans Memorial Monument from the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 731 (Sixty-members) Dear President Santos: Thank you for your letter dated on March 10, 2007. As Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 731, we support and endorse the Korean War Veterans (KWV), Chapter 231 project proposal to build a KWV Memorial Monument on the properties of the Liliuokalani Gardens. In reference to the letter from Mayor Harry Kim, which rejected KWV Chapter 231 proposal due to his reasoning that, "due to the Hawaiian heritage, it would be an inappropriate site for the Memorial." I am of Hawaiian heritage and fought in the Korean War and was wounded in action. I believe any one born in Hawaii regardless of race or nationality is a local Hawaiian and we should pay tribute to my comrades. What the KWV is requesting is just a monument and not a cemetery. This takes up only a little space of the beautiful Queen Liliuokalani gardens. I believe, Queen Liliuokalani, our last monarch of the Hawaiian Islands would be honored to be bestowed to have this monument on her gardens. Queen Liliuokalani's famed Hawaiian popular song "Aloha Oe," or "Farewell to Thee," would be soothing to those who have lost their loved ones, or for those who deserved recognition in the Korean War, and for all Veterans of all Wars. In addition, Queen Liliuokalani would be honored to have her sons and daughters from Hawaii in her garden close to her. Mahalo, OZ Joe K. Korean War Veterans Chapter 231 has a preliminary concept and plans t4 eonsttvo+t a Korean War Veteran Memmial Monument, to Honor the long over due Korean War Veterans Killed in action and Missing in Action. This Monument would be approximately 16 feet by 16 feet square on a stepped up foundations, -with a Korean We style roof structure. Plans and sketches are at incl. 1. The four (4) Statues of Servicemen, and Memorial Plaques with names of Killed in action, and Missing in action will be inside under the roof so as to provide protection from the elements, incl. 2. This will bean attractive facility which will represent the Korean War Veterans with Honor, Respect, and Distinction . The monument will be a definite asset to the Community, the Korean groups of the Community, the Korean War Veterans and their families. Veterans of all Services, and the County of Hawaii. We therefore would litre to request that the Memorial Monument be located in the Liliuokalani Gardens, at the corner of Banyan Drive and Lihiwai St., across the street, east of the Nihon Rat, there is open property at this location-which would be fitting and proper for the location of such a Distinctive Memonal facility. It would lend itself to a respectable Liliuokalani Gardens and Park, and would attract the many Tourist that visit the Gardens and Park, and the many hundreds of local Hawaii County citizens who walk around the Garden daily, to show that Hawaii County Honors its Veterans who have given their lives to preserve the Freedom and liberty that we all enjoy to this day. My support, and endorse the location in Liliuokalani Gardens for a Korean War Veterans Memorial Monument, it is only fitting and proper that this Distinguished and Honorable Memorial Monument be positioned there. Thank you. Sincerely: Sgt/Maj(ret) Emily Wery Adjutant In 1840 a boy was born to Kino'ole O Liliha Ho'olulu and Benjamin Pitman in Hilo Hawaii. He was the youngest of three children. Their home was located on the site of the present Hilo Hotel. The street that ran in front of their home was named after Kino'ole O Liliha Ho'olulu. Timothy Henry Ho'olulu Pitman was the name of that child and on 27 Feb. 1863 in Annapolis Parole Camp, Annapolis Maryland he died of Lung _ Fever. He was buried in Boston Mass. Who was Timothy Henry Ho'olulu? Where did he come from? Why did he die in a Maryland? This is his story. On the State of Hawai'I Coat of Arms there are two Hawaiian Warrior Chiefs that flank the crest. Those two chiefs are the twin bothers Kame'eiamoku and Kamanawa. They were called the "Royal Twins of Kekaulike", the king of Maui, and were two of the four counselors of King Kamehameha . Chief Kame'eiamoku's son Ho'olulu was the man that carried the bones of King Kamehameha on his back as they were taken and hidden. Ho'olulu became the high chief of Hilo and had a number of children, a son named Mo'oheau (the park in Hilo is named after him. A daughter named Kino'ole O Liliha Ho'olulu who married Benjamin Pitman and who Kino'ole Street is named after. Kino'ole died young and Benjamin Pitman took their 3 children and moved back to where he was born, Boston Mass. His daughter Mary returned to Hawaii, but his two sons stayed with him in Boston. When the American Civil War started Timothy Henry Ho'olulu Pitman joined the Union Army to fight against slavery he was captured and while a prisoner of war contacted lung fever. He was paroled back to the Union Army because of his sickness and shortly after that died. He was twenty three years old. His father had his remains brought back to Boston where he remains to this day. Timothy Henry Ho'olulu Pitman was one of the first men of the Big Island who fought and died for the United States of America. Many others have followed his footsteps, they have been of many different races but the one thing that they have in common is that they were of this island and they fought and died for it. 411 Timothy Henry Ho'olulu Pitman was born of the line of the twins Kame'eiamoku and Kamanawa as was his cousin Queen Lili'uokalani. It is only fitting that a monument that honors that memory should be in a park that was created and named after his cousin Queen Lili'uokalani. LET THEM ALL BE SO HONORED AS THEY HAVE ALL PAID THE ULTIMATE PRICE Council Chairman Peter Hoffman, and members of the county council My name is Hiroshi Shima, member of kwv. Bi chapter #231. I speak in favor of resolution #631 The Korean war, 33,741 American serviceman killed in action -92,615 Wounded • 7,245 POW's. State of Hawaii, 456 KIA's and County of Hawaii, 47. Only to the South Koreans it is not a forgotten war. Because of us today South Korea is the world 10'ffi in economy, in technology, medical, academics, sports and others. Absolutely nothing at the end of the war and in one generation they have accomplished this amazing recovery. They have sent their military to support United States in every war since the Korean war. I am 81 years of age and would like to see the memorial dedicated before passing on. This is the only county without a Korean war memorial. Besides the 47 KIA of Korean war, 157 second world war, 50 VeitNam war KIA'S are listed on a plaque at veterans cemetery #1. How many of our citizens visit the pavilion where this plaque is located. The only time I know is when we have memorial services attended by mostly by veterans and family members. This is the reason we want to locate our memorial where it can viewed by many at a convenient location. The KIA's of all wars will be placed on this memorial. The KIA's of all wars should be honored and remembered by paying the most ultimate price for your freedom. Many citizens take this precious freedom for granted as if they have earned it. The military of the United States have given you this freedom, please cherish this most valuable treasure and the servicemen who have paid the ultimate price with heir lives should be in your prayers.
