Re: Request for a Special Meeting to Consider and Vote on an Override of the Mayor's Veto
of Bill 252
Dear Chairman Hoffmann,
As you are aware, the Mayor vetoed Bill 252 and transmitted his notification to the Council on
Friday, June 13, 2008. Council Rule No. 2-2 states that "except as otherwise provided by law,
special meetings may be called by the Chairperson or a majority of the Council." Pursuant to
Council Rule No. 2-2, I hereby request that as Council Chair, you call a special meeting to
consider an override of the Mayor's veto of Bill 252 on June 30, 2008, at 8:30 a.m.. Please
keep in mind when scheduling this special meeting that proper written notice must be filed in
accordance with Hawaii Revised Statutes § 92-7 and Hawaii County Charter § 13-20(c).
According to Hawaii County Charter § 13-20(c), notice of the special meeting must be
published in at least two daily newspapers of general circulation in this county at least twenty-
four hours in advance of the meeting. The notice to the media as well as the posted notice must
contain a brief resume of the principal business to be taken up at the special meeting. In the
event that publication of such notice cannot be made due to insufficient time, the meeting notice
shall be made by broadcasting a minimum of three announcements in the English language over
FCC licensed public radio stations in this county or television stations with a local audience at

least twenty-four hours in advance of the special meeting. Such announcements via radio or
television must be made between the hours of 7:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M.
