I have recently began improving my health and biking seems to be the only exercise that I can consistently commit to. I currently live in Waimea with my girlfriend and sister (who also bike) and we often do not participate in this healthy and enjoyable activity due to the unsafe roads in town and on back roads. I have consistently found dangerous situations in which biking and walking is unwelcome and unsafe. Certain (and often main) roads in Waimea town have side walks, but no shoulder lane for bikers / skateboards, therefore bikers are either forced to illegally ride on the side walk or dangerously bike on the road. Other people at my workplace also enjoy biking to improve their health and stress levels and their children are also encouraged to participate in this activity. However, due to the conditions of the roads in Waimea, the parents and children are often very limited to the places in which they can ride their bikes and more often than not, I find them circling empty parking lots. Safe roads for walking / biking encourages people to leave their cars at home and walk to work (less pollution) and get in shape and stay active (a healthier Hawaii). If you have a vote or say in this bill, please support bill 285 for those of us that wish to lead healthy and safe lives. Thank you very much, Douglas A. T. Morrison Software Engineer C.A.R.A - W. M.
