Dear County Council,
We are requesting that you reevaluate the financial allocations associated with the proposed
bond float and spread the proposed CIP projects over a longer period of time. We are concerned
that with the current down turn in the economy, the amount of money the County currently
collects in taxes will also decrease, making it difficult to fund an already large county
government, and service the existing and new bonds. Our fear is that the county will have no
choice other than to raise taxes to help pay for the indebtedness and its high cost of operation.
The impending cost of the mandatory new radio towers, closure of the Hilo Landfill, solutions for
the solid waste problem, etc are all large ticket items that will also become a tax burden to our
community in the next few years.
The home owners are already facing hard times with the never ending escalation in cost of the
basic necessities for life not to mention the rising cost of fuels. Add the economic down turn
with people losing their jobs; we feel that we have a bad mixture of events that will really hurt
the community.
Tax dollars that may have previously been used for CIP projects, bond repayment, county
operations, etc will now need to be spent on providing the basic necessities of life for the
increasing numbers of less fortunate people.
Please reconsider the priorities and spend responsibly, our community will have to pick up the
bill one way or another and at this time, can our community really afford to?
