Re: Bill 285
Council members
Over the last several years Waimea town has grown tremendously.
Traffic has increased exponentially, while infrastructure has not. Our
current lack of infrastructure is negatively impacting our quality of life.
Pressure on our community has been incredible. Commuting through
our small 4 mile town during peak traffic, can take as long as an hour.
Many thousands of motorists commute through our town to and from
the resorts daily. (@4 miles an hour) Our community desperately
needs traffic circulation improvements. As fuel prices have spiked,
townspeople are resorting to other modes of transportation as well, in-
cluding, bicycling, walking, running or riding horses to their destina-
tions, however, we do not have the infrastructure needed to safely fa-
cilitate alternate modes of transportation. We have no bike lanes, a
shortage of cross walks and virtually no sidewalks. We have no trail-
ways or interconnected parks, and we desperately need them. We
need the Waimea trails and greenways project to for allow for alterna-
tive modes of transportation, and to foster community pride. Daily,
cars, trucks, and long haul vehicles from Kawaihae and Hilo harbors
transverse the failing bridges in Waimea. In conjunction with the Wai-
mea trails and green ways project, our bridges desperately need re-
placement. Additionally our community also needs a district park, and
comprehensive planning and design. I urge to to approve all of the
projects slated for South Kohala under Bill 285.
