Hi Pete,
Please tell your fellow council folks the following: It is the opinion of the former energy coordinator for the
County of Hawaii that an energy department should be created, and it should be a top priority of the outgoing
administration. The energy work being currently done at the Dept. of R&D is commendable but is only
scratching the surface regarding the magnitude of the economic impact rising oil prices or a possible oil delivery
disruption could have on the Island economy. For all intents and purposes, Hawaii County is rolling the dice
hoping the State, Feds, HELCO, or some future technology will solve Hawaii County's oil. dependency problem.
That's a bad choice. Hawaii County needs to put the necessary government infrastructure in place and begin
doing the hard work to increase energy efficiency and the installation of renewable energy Island wide. As it
stands now, the current Hawaii County government energy resources are inadequate to meet this task.
